Job Title: Behavior Support Assistant

Primary Purpose:

Provides direct one-on-one behavioral intervention to teach communication, social, and daily living skills and reduce maladaptive behaviors in home, community, and school settings.  Will utilize interventions developed out of the science of Applied Behavior Analysis.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Associate’s degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment as required by the ESSA
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to work with students with disabilities

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledgeable of general office equipment, assistive technology devices/systems, specialized curricula, Behavior Intervention Plans, etc.

 

Experience:

Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

  1. Follow the IEP to include Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) to provide beneficial and effective care to student.

  2. Assist students with day-to-day tasks.
  3. Observe student behaviors to collect data.

  4. Teach specific skills required for skill acquisition and maladaptive behavior reduction.
  5. Nurture a student’s social abilities.
  6. Inform teacher and itinerant personnel about behavioral intervention findings.
  7. Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships by pairing self as a reinforcing entity and building the value for the student of social interaction

  8. Prompts safe and socially acceptable replacement behaviors to build a repertoire of communication, social interaction, and problem-solving skills.

  9. Fades prompts appropriately to promote both successful and independent responding.

  10. Increases the frequency or duration of safe and appropriate replacement behaviors by providing access to reinforcers (desired items/actions, attention, or removal of demands/aversive situations).

  11. Accurately collects behavior data including: A-B-C, count, frequency, duration, latency, inter-res[ponse time, event, interval based recording, etc.

  12. Follows the goals and interventions utilizing sound judgement and seeks out appropriate consultation.

  13. Collaborates with teachers and itinerant personnel to provide services effectively and without disruption to the environment or other individuals in the environment.

  14. Collaborates with teachers and itinerant personnel on reinforcement and early intervention information.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
